ADHD Parent Training Course
Having a child with ADHD in the home can be difficult; difficult for the child, difficult for siblings and difficult for parents. The whole family unit is affected. Getting through homework and chores is another story altogether! And medication alone doesn’t work for some children, while some parents don’t want to use medication for other reasons. So what options are parents and caregivers left with?
Recent research shows that participating in a parenting programme specific for parents of children with ADHD can help. These Behavioural Training Programmes (BPTs) can lead to improvements in the child’s symptoms, better relationships in the home, and can even have positive effects on the child’s performance in school.
Why is this?
Research shows that:
- Improvements in behaviour are related to healthy parent-child relationships.
- Children with ADHD respond better to certain parenting styles and discipline methods.
- Positive changes are made through knowing where to focus attention to correct behaviour.
- Change does not happen overnight, but over a period of time.
- Because parenting a child with ADHD can be hard work, parents and caregivers also need support.
What will we look at over the 7 weeks:
- How the diagnosis of ADHD is made and common co-occurring conditions
- ADHD treatment options: effective conventional and supplementary treatments
- Understanding the problems associated with ADHD and how to parent a child with ADHD
- Improving parent-child and sibling relationships
- Evidence-based strategies helping your child learn to manage their own emotions and behaviours
- Effective discipline strategies
- Helping your child with homework and studying
- Using parenting styles that work
- Learning more about your child’s strengths and how to use these to your child’s advantage
Why join the group? During the sessions, there will be opportunities to practise the skills and apply knowledge to your own parenting situation. You will also get support from Dr Vicky and other members of the weekly group. As a member of the group, you will have access to downloadable resources which include a parenting manual, other helpful information and as recordings of the live sessions.
